This will be an intense hands-on fourteen (14) day training to teach skills required for the administration and monitoring of network services.

Objective

After this training the participants will be able to install, upgrade, operate and secure a Unix/ Linux operating system and use it to provide essential Internet services. This course will target persons who are technically competent but have no prior experience to Unix/Linux. The training will empower the various network administrators from the various institutions with skills that will enable them to effectively manage the networks of the various institutions that they represent. This will enable them to ensure the bandwidth they are been provided with is been used for academic work and not been consumed by viruses, spam, peer-to-peer traffic and other malware

Who Should Attend?

System Administrators who are conversant with the TCP/IP network and are involved in providing Internet services .They should also be focusing on monitoring and administration of internet services.

Prerequisites

System administrators with experience in managing PCs and installing software. Previous experience in Unix / Linux will be an added advantage.

Course content

This course will focus on FreeBSD and Debian operating systems and will be divided into two tracks, Unix/Linux administration and Scalable network Services.

Unix/Linux Administration

• Installation of FreeBSD and Debian operating systems

• The Directory Structure

• Operating Directories and Files

• Installing packages

• Upgrading the OS

• Security using pf and iptables.

Scalable Network Services

• Proxy (Squid)

• Bandwidth Management

• DNS (BIND) • DHCP • Mail (Zimbra) • Apache Web server • Website Administration (Joomla) • Virtualization 3.Network Monitoring and Bandwidth Management • What is bandwidth? • Latency • Measuring bandwidth • Bandwidth management using squid: I. Access Control Lists II.Redirectors III.Authenticators IV.Delay Pools • Speed tests and bandwidth tests • Network monitoring tools: SNMP,cacti, nagios, smokeping

V. Items Required Each Participant is to bring a laptop with wireless connectivity.
